I like the BMW x4 and x6. I don't understand why they are so universally hated. Sure, the aren't as practical as the x3 and x5, but that's not the point.

I agree. People complain because they aren't as practical as the x3/5.
So what?

This...apparently...they use dynamic 4 times in the first block of text in their press release. Also, 'classical sporting coupe' lel:
Extrovert and dynamic appearance.
The new BMW X4 is based on the technical blueprint of the BMW X3, but displays a sporting character very much its own and takes dynamics to another new level. That much is clear when you view the new model head-on. The large air intakes positioned on the outer edges of the front end and the character lines in the front apron allow the BMW X4 – with its signature BMW twin headlights and front fog lamps (both optionally with LED technology) – to maximise its visual presence on the road. The roofline reaches its highest point above the driver and then swoops down smoothly to the trailing edge of the tailgate, mimicking the design language of a classical sporting coupe. The signature swage line running along the flanks of BMW models is split into two on the X4. The first section rises dynamically from the front wheel arches to the rear door handles, while the second part draws the eye to the muscular sculpting of the rear wings. The rear end, complete with L-shaped LED lights in exclusive X4 design and diffuser-look styling, likewise highlights the outstanding dynamic ability of the new BMW X4 – even before it turns a wheel.

So why not just get a 3 or 4GC?

Less use of dynamic in the press release.

So what is the point?
Just as much weight as the X3 and X5, if not more, and less cargo versatility.
If X4 and X6 were less mysteriously massive than their long-roof counterparts, and instead were truly 3-door all-road coupes, as their even-numbered series designation used to mean, there might be something compelling about them as a versatile alternative sport coupe.
But X6 is 5000lbs, give or take a couple hundred based on trim level, and X4 is north of 4000lbs.
I am not sure what BMW is making cars out of, but they are almost all deceptively heavy for their physical size.

No one complains that they're impracticle. People complain that they're fucking ugly and lack any semblance of tasteful design.

steel. Lots and lots of steel.
Apparently they are too cheap to use more than a tiny bit of aluminum. Gotta offer those cheap lease deals...

For the mass on some of those vehicles... the amount of steel that they are using should amount to small-arms-proof armor plating as standard equipment.
